Before comparing AI phone tools, name the problem you want to solve. Are calls going unanswered? Is your staff spending too long writing notes? Or do you want to understand why an intake call did not lead to a callback?

Those questions point to different jobs. One product can cover several, but a transcript, a summary and a call score tell you different things about what it does.

Three jobs, different tools

Job What happens What staff receive
Answer calls An AI agent speaks with the caller, asks questions and can connect them to a person. The details collected and any handoff the service supports.
Save call details A tool records or transcribes a conversation while someone else handles the call. It can prepare notes afterward. A recording, transcript, summary or notes in the firm’s software, depending on the tool.
Review call handling A person or tool reviews a conversation to check how it was handled. Feedback against selected questions or standards, sometimes with a score.

For example, VXT describes call transcripts, summaries and file notes for legal teams. CaseRescue’s audit page accepts an existing recording or transcript for review. These are examples of different jobs; check the full service before choosing one.

A tool that reviews recordings cannot recover a conversation that never happened because nobody answered.

Start with your problem

Fictional example: a personal injury firm’s staff answer daytime calls, but the phone goes unanswered after 6 p.m. The intake manager also wants to understand why some daytime callers never reach the next step.

The evening problem needs someone to answer. Start by deciding who should speak to callers and when your team should receive a transfer or callback details.

The daytime problem needs a look at calls that staff already handled. Review a sample: did the caller meet the firm’s criteria, were their details clear, and did anyone take responsibility for follow-up?

A firm with both problems may need both workflows. Buying a call-review tool alone does not add evening coverage. Adding an answering service does not automatically give it access to every daytime call.

Check what monitoring means

“Call monitoring” can mean reviewing a completed call or helping staff during a live one. Ask the provider which it offers.

Reading a live transcript, listening to the audio, coaching a staff member and joining the conversation are separate features. Dialpad’s monitoring documentation, for example, distinguishes listening, private coaching, joining and taking over a call. Availability depends on the service and setup.

If a product gives a score, ask what it measures. A caller who falls outside your practice may have been handled well. A high score also does not tell you whether someone called the person back. Read the conversation and check the next step.

Where Lighthouse fits today

Lighthouse answers calls 24/7 and gives your team a record of the calls it handles. You choose your firm’s description, intake questions and daytime and after-hours contacts. Lighthouse can ask for the details your firm needs and try to connect callers to the appropriate person.

Staff can review the intake fields to assess whether the case fits the firm’s criteria, read a quick summary, or open the full transcript. For Spanish-language calls, they can read the English translation or the original Spanish.

The dashboard also shows a live transcript while a Lighthouse call is happening. That lets staff read the conversation as it unfolds. The dashboard walkthrough shows the live view, completed records and follow-up options.

Use those records to decide whom to call back and what to clarify. Your firm still makes the decision about accepting a case. Our call-record guide explains which view to use for each question.

Questions for your demo

Ask the provider to show these answers:

  1. Who speaks to the caller? Your staff, an AI agent or a live answering service?
  2. Which calls can it access? Only calls it handles, calls from your current phone system, or recordings you provide?
  3. What does staff receive? Ask to see the transcript, summary, intake fields or review report.
  4. What does a score measure? Check whether it reflects your firm’s criteria and whether you can read the supporting conversation.
  5. Who handles follow-up? Show how a colleague knows a call needs attention and what happens if a transfer goes unanswered.

If you want to try Lighthouse, the trial guide explains how to start with practice calls and selected hours. The customization walkthrough shows how to set the questions and contacts.

Choose a workflow that gets the caller help and gives your staff a clear next step.
